     For those of you unaware as to what “Operation: Chokehold” was, let me inform you. Chokehold, started by Fake Steve, was set to be a collective effort to crash AT&T’s network to try and prove that the users control the network, not the executives.

     While I applaud those who tried to make a stand, I also understand why it could have been a dangerous thing. While Chokehold’s original goal to crash, or severely hinder, the network didn’t quite happen I believe a stronger goal was achieved. Chokehold didn’t crash the network, and a small few believe the network was lagging a little more, but the best thing about this protest was that it got the media’s, and AT&T’s, attention.

     The FCC reported prior to the protest that in the scenario Chokehold was to succeed it could keep those in dire need from being able to contact anyone, i.e. 911.  However that was the only truly negative effect from the network crashing that anyone could bring forward. AT&T also made the following comment:

     “We understand that fakesteve.net is primarily a satirical forum, but there is nothing amusing about advocating that customers attempt to deliberately degrade service on a network that provides critical communications services for more than 80 million customers. We know that the vast majority of customers will see this action for what it is: an irresponsible and pointless scheme to draw attention to a blog.”

     This comment goes to show that AT&T has no regard for those who try to bring to light the anger that its users are feeling. While I don’t necessarily expect AT&T to be “shaking in their boots” so to speak, I do expect them to show more than just a mocking standpoint when people protest their horrible service. Regardless of how effective the protest was or even how many members participated AT&T should still be concerned that any number of their customers would consider breaking their own service just to prove a point. These seem to be very dangerous waters AT&T is in but they still are yet to give a hoot. For the record, as of the writing of this article, the Facebook group dedicated to “Operation: Chokehold” is 4,588 users strong. While this is only 1/16000 of their userbase my previous statement still remains valid, it only takes one to bring the house down. Especially considering the amount of media hype this protest has received both good and bad.

      In the end the point from us, the disgruntled users, is simple… AT&T you better shape up. One of these days there will be a phone that will top the iPhone, it is simply a matter of time. But one of these days there will definitely be a new champion and then AT&T will have nothing going for them. They have bad service and equally bad customer support. However the much more likely scenario, that Apple will get smart and go with Verizon, will cripple AT&T even faster. In either event the outcome is the same, users will jump ship so quickly AT&T won’t know what hit them. So be prepared AT&T, you haven’t got much time…

     It is times like these that it makes me ashamed to still be an AT&T customer. I try and give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that in the near future things will be fixed, but when charts like these illustrate their total lack of concern it makes me weep.

     The infamous “Fake Steve” has made the following statement:

     “Go look at their financial statements and open up the Financial Operations and Statistics Summary and look at capital expenditures over the past eight quarters. I’m no math whiz, but it looks like capex has gone down by about 30% over the time period. Scroll down a bit to the Wireless section and check out data revenues — they’re up 80% over the same period.”

     OK Kids, here’s the scoop, about a month ago I got my hands on V-Moda’s new addition to their production line of headphones called “Faze”.  Now I, in the past did a review on the Vibe II’s, and an even earlier one on the Vibe Duo’s and now there are the “Faze”.  So let’s get into the nitty-gritty here and let me tell you about them.

     Let’s start with what comes with our iDevices.  The stock Apple Headphones.  We all know they are functional and that’s it.  Aside from their built in control ability they are so basic and barely adequate that anyone with any sense of fidelity is quick to upgrade from them to something nicer, like the V-Moda’s line.  OK, I’m being too kind here, the Apple Headphones which fall out of your head if the wind blows simply suck where as after market headphones come in a variety of models and quality, much like cars.  So sticking with this analogy let me to help you better understand where the Faze Headphones stand.  Here’s the break down.  The Vibe II’s are the Ferrari, the Vibe Duos are the Corvettes and the Faze are the Toyota Camary.  Now this is no small deal readers.  The Camary is the best selling car in the nation.  It does not have the frills, bells and whistles the other two models and many others out in the market have.  You do not get turbo.  You don’t get the fancy cup holders and the heated seats.  Sure all those things are nice.  But what the Faze has, like the Camary is a basic standard of quality that is superlative, reasonable, at economy prices which is exactly what we all need in these lean times.  Best of all, V-Moda has not been nationalized or saved with our tax dollars.

     So let’s talk about what the Faze has.  Remember they are basic.  These ear-buds are made of metal like their nearest cousin the Vibe Duo’s, however the metal in comparison feels a bit less in quality, but this is in a direct comparison and on their own you would not even know the difference.  The wires, unlike the Faze’s higher end cousins which are covered in a kevlar weave, are sheathed in rubber.  Other than that the headphones work well enough to leave you pleasantly surprised in comparison to their higher cousins and definitely a full step or two above the iPhones stock earphones.  They are, as all V-Moda’s Headsets, in ear design, and just to be thorough for all of you new to this market, this means they actually are to be stuck into your ear canals thus blocking many ambient and incidental sounds from your environment.  So if you want to hear your music, and the baby crying on the bus, then these are not what you are looking for.  However if this is not an issue, allow me to inform you that the Faze comes with some nice accessories.

     The Faze comes with the standard mic/controller situated like it’s nearest cousin, the Vibe Duo along the right jawline, but surprisingly, in a better design.  One of my issues with the Duo’s was this mechanism was cylindrical with a small, round button that is difficult to locate and find by touch alone.  The Faze however, is shaped rectangularly both in length and width, with the button taking up about 50% of the space on one side allowing you better tactile discovery for control, as can be seen in the pic above).  So you in fact gain in these headphones as a result.  The mic works fine as compared to both the Vibe II’s and Duo’s as well.  They come with two sets of three silicon ear canal sizes and even with Active Flex Ear Hooks that create a secure fit for the active lifestyle. A 3.5 mm jack, which allows compatibility with many audio devices including iPod, iPhone, MP3 players, computers and gaming devices and for shared enjoyment, a headphone splitter included to allow two users to listen to the same source.  As always, there is a small carrying pouch included.

     But let’s be honest, aside from these bells and whistles we use headphones for their basic purpose and thus their name…The speakers.  This is where some quality falls off.  Compared to the Faze’s Cousins, the Vibe II’s are the best.  The Duo’s are great, and Faze’s are…good.   Now this should not deter you.  Remember, these are economy headphones.  Remember Camary?  Dependable, reliable, utilitarian, functional and good quality.  These are not the Ferrari’s.  You get what you pay for and in this case you get a bit more. I personally found the depth and richness of sound to be lacking when compared to the Vibe II’s or Duo’s, but when compared to the stock headphones, they are leaps and bounds better. With some time spent using them while playing with the iPod equalizer functions in settings, I found a setting type that upped the quality just that much more making them more than adequate to listen to.

     Now here’s the rub.  The Faze Headphones by V-Moda are supposedly sold exclusively in only two locations and come in only two colors mutually exclusive to these locations.   They are BestBuy and Radio Shack.  And they come in either Black, or Gunmetal.  The blacks are found only at BestBuy and the Gunmetals are found….yep only at Radio Shack.  The Faze retails at $49.99, I just did a quick online search for the purposes of this article and have found them for even cheaper, which is great for you all.  Especially in these lean times.

     So, the V-Moda Faze gets a thumbs up here for their quality and economy value while maintaining a good degree of fidelity without succumbing to coasting off their premium name.  As a result, if you are in the market for something above what came in your iPhone box, but don’t wish to break the bank in upgrading?  The V-Moda Faze Headphones are your ticket to a better life in sound and music.  So buy them, help the economy and yourself.

     SPECK Products are fantastic.  No, once again I am not referring to the edible variety (which goes best with Telagio Cheese, IMO)  but the very products that protect our precious iDevices.  This is not to say SPECK only caters to Apple and the world of cutting edge technology they create, but just about every portable device out there.  For this article, and just in time for the holidays, I am going to concentrate on SPECKs new version of their SeeThru protective case.  Their original design was a two piece plastic cover that doubled as a video stand for your iPhone. Briefly explaining how this worked, the case was basically split in half, allowing the two plastic pieces to slide From the top and bottom, over the back of the device meeting and overlapping in the middle.  When wishing to use the case as a stand, one would pull the bottom half off which would have an open space in the overlapped area in which you would be able to place the iPhone side-ways on top of it which allowed for a stable platform to watch movies at a 10-15 degree angle. While this design was rather nice the only flaw with this design I saw was that the plastic seemed to feel flimsy when on the phone.  The case had tremendous “play” in that it was not secure on the phone and also had no protective attributes inside to help shield the iPhone from scuffing while it is bouncing around in your pocket.

     Fast forward to today.  SPECK, redesigned the SeeThru to mimic its cousin the “Candy Shell”.  Now I did a review on the Candy Shell sometime back which can be reviewed here.  How they are similar is in their basic design, in which they are both a single piece of polyurethane plastic.  After this, they differ completely.  The SeeThru is cleverly designed to have a snug fit, just as the Candy Shell, but what is particularly impressive about the SeeThru’s design is that the rim is made of  silicon which is ingenuitively injection molded and fused to the polyurethane plastic.  This is particularly brilliant, as this allows a clean tight fit that is of OEM standards and allows the phone to be placed within the secure confines of the case without the fear of any scuffs or scratches to be suffered by the device when inserting or removing it from the SeeThru. The same silicon is placed down the four corners of the case, which is how you are actually able to get the phone into the case.

     So, how well does the SeeThru do its job?  Well, I have had ample time to test this item out (due to me having serious computer issues) to the tune of 6 weeks.  SPECK was kind enough to send a clear one for me and also a red one for my GF.  Now you’re probably asking, “Why does she get one and I don’t?”  The reason I asked for two, is I tend to be pretty careful with my toys.  However my GF is not quite as meticulous as I, and I wanted to really put this case through its paces. Between her dropping it all the time and throwing it in her massive handbag with all sorts of primping items and keys, I could not think of a better test subject to work over this case.  Believe me… she beat the balls off the SeeThru.  So here’s the run-down.

     My experience with the SeeTru was quite nice.  The Case does its job almost as well as the Candy Shell.  The reason it is not quite as good is that there is no full silicon lining in the SeeThru which would add blunt force trauma protection.  Other than this, the SeeThru is just that, see through.  It is transparent allowing you to see all the itty bits and details of your Phone.  The buttons are also silicon overlays making every part of the phone covered save the docking port and the touch screen.  The nice thing about the buttons are they are in no way diminished in responsiveness with this covering.  The rubber edging also has a nice attribute, it is slightly raised which means putting your phone face down will not allow contact with a flat surface.  Cool, right?  Protective is almost a mis-nomer as the SeeThru is more like a condom than a case.   The protection is exemplary allowing nothing to get through, save for the things that are supposed to get in, everything is protected in a glossy transparent plastic case that wards off almost all the evil of a contentious world that wishes to destroy your device.  It works, simple as that.

     Now, moving on to the torture my female partner has made the item endure, tells an interesting tale.  The abuse she put the SeeThru… through amazed me.  Let me state now early on, it has done its job very well, to hers and my satisfaction alike.  However, let’s talk about where the SeeThru falls short.  First off it scratches way too easily.  I was stunned that after giving the case to her and her slipping it in with the customary SPECK *snop!*, a day later the case was littered with scores and scratches.  Not exactly what you want to see on a clear case that is made to allow you to see the beauty of your device.  Another disappointment was getting the phone out.  I want to be clear to any of you who switch cases a lot.  This is not the case for you.  I can tell you now getting the phone out of this case is in no way a small feat.  It was like pulling teeth and trying to get Tiger Woods to open up and admit he cheated on his wife.  Yeah… it’s that tough.  Sure SPECK gave instructions on how to remove the Phone.  I tried them.  I was emitting so much force according to their directions I feared I’d break the glass on the phone. Ultimately I took a screw driver wrapped in a thin piece of cloth (so as to not scratch the Phone) and wedged it under the phone between it and the case through the docking port and slowly, carefully pried the device from the stubborn protective confines of the case until it was exposed enough for me to remove it the rest of the way by hand.  Yeah, it’s that tough!  But at least you now can see how snug and perfectly it rests within the case assuring more than excellent protection.

     The cases come in an assortment of colors for the particular consumer and unlike other accessories, removal and implementation are a wiz. The cases run around $29.95, which is about average and comes in Pink, Black, Clear, Aqua, and Red.  It looks great, performs its primary duty flawlessly and makes me wish I was an iPhone so I could feel as secure in its protective wrapping, as today things are so uncertain couldn’t we all use a bit more of that safe feeling?

     I would definitely recommend this protection for any of you if you are in the market for a new case (disbarring those who use cases as inter-changeable fashion accessories).  This is the best clear case available on the market to date.  Period.  Buy it!

     As we are all fully aware AT&T’s service quality is horrible to say the least, but who would have thought that the wireless giant would ever blame it on their customers?

     The main reason anyone chooses to leave AT&T, or choose not to ever think about their service, is due to their fairly useless network. When the first iPhone came out, they weren’t ready. When the second iPhone came out, they still weren’t ready. When the third iPhone came out and all the way up until today they still remain unready, or unwilling, to support the main device their users crave. You would think that the “fool me once” proverb should surely apply. But AT&T has gone and further crossed the line by trying to blame their main source of wireless income, the iPhone userbase.

     AT&T’s head of consumer services, Ralph de la Vega, told investors at a USB conference that they are in talks of releasing incentives for high-bandwith users to “reduce or modify their usage.” AT&T blames the heavy bandwith users for all their network woes. AT&T simply claims a scapegoat every time something isn’t going their way, and iPhone users seem to be the most prominent solution.

     MMS was not released because iPhone users would use it to much. Network is having problems because iPhone users use it to much. Tethering isn’t ready because iPhone users would use it to much… and the list goes on. Why would you release a device for 3 consecutive years without being ready to support it at full capacity? Someone should have stepped back after year one and reevaluated their network strategy, not continued to barrage it with a swarm of new high usage devices.

     I am more for hoping AT&T would spend their time, and my money, on upgrading their network, not just trying to find someone else to blame it on. I pay darn good money to use my network as much as I please, not have it restricted from me for no other reason than the fact that I use what I buy.

     The iPhone 3GS has been out for a while, and I’m sure many of you have considered purchasing it. With the new compass, 3.0 megapixel camera, twice the speed,  and a 32GB option, it’s hard to resist. For those of you who are trying to find out more about the new iPhone 3GS, Apple’s technical specifications might not be as specific and detail-oriented as needed. Lucky for you, there are plenty of people out there who have taken the time to say a thing or two about iPhone 3GS.

     When it comes to third-party reviews of Apple products, you tend to find out things you never would have realized if you only browsed Apple.com. Even though it appears that the iPhone 3GS is pretty much the same as the 3G, there is more to it than meets the eye. Jason at Gizmodo brought the difference between the 3G’s and 3GS’s camera to my attention when he shared a few pictures (above) taken from each iPhone. The quality of the 3GS’s photo far exceeds the 3G’s. This is due to the 3GS’s new tap-to-focus feature combined with the 3.0 megapixel camera as opposed to the 2.0 megapixel camera the 3G has.

      A simple yet quite convenient feature that was also added to the 3GS is an oleophobic coating that makes the iPhone’s screen resistant to fingerprints and easy to wipe clean of grease and gunk. Joshua at Engadget claims that it “wipes almost entirely clean with a single swipe on a pant leg.” I know details like that probably aren’t on the top of your list of features a phone should have, but it’s nice to know things about the iPhone that Apple hasn’t made widely known.

     One of the most amazing things about the 3GS that Apple has told us about is the speed. Apple decided to put 256MB of RAM in the 3GS as opposed to the 3G’s 128MB. In fact, now that the 3GS has 256MB of RAM, it now has the same amount of RAM as my old Latitude CPx laptop. That might not sound too amazing to you, but think about it this way: my laptop runs a lot more processes and programs than an iPhone does, and on a much bigger scale. Apple has also upped the CPU from the previous 412MHz to 600MHz. You can only imagine the games and applications developers will create that take the RAM and CPU of a laptop. You now can buy the phone that’s a computer in your pocket: the iPhone 3GS.

     But, wait! The hardware changes don’t stop there. Apple decided to swap the iPhones old graphics chip with a new one. The PowerVG SGX graphics chip adds the capability of “robust visuals”, as Engadget’s Joshua calls them. The new graphics chip increases the iPhone’s application loading times by using OpenGL 2.0. The iPhone 3G can only support OpenGL 1.1, and since OpenGL 2.0 and 1.1 are incompatible,  it is rumored that Apple may allow certain graphics intensive apps to come exclusively to the 3GS.

      After all of those hardware changes, there is, of course, the magnetometer addition. With the magnetometer, you can take advantage of  the 3GS’s Compass application or use the added compass functionality in other applications. The 3GS’s Maps application now orients in the same direction you are facing. Imagine using a navigation application designed to be used on foot. With the compass feature, applications can now make use of which direction you are facing.

    With all of the iPhone 3GS’s features and upgrades, it has become even more obvious that the iPhone is not, and will never be an ordinary phone. Apple has packed power, sleekness, and brilliance into the iPhone, and as it is upgraded time after time, even more people across the globe are switching to the iPhone.

     Yesterday, on a Chinese forum, photos of the “Next Generation iPhone” were posted. They were then, quickly removed. But, due to the size of the internet, the photos were preserved and posted all over the internet. The original thread was translated by Samac92.

     The pictures were blurry, like all leaked photos, but they are definitely clear enough to make out the user interface. The pictures claim to show of the new iPhone hardware but it looks extremely similar to the iPhone 3G. We do know that this could be the new hardware because of the shots of the compass and the auto-focus camera, both which would need new hardware to function.

     The auto-focus camera would need a new camera. It is rumored that the new camera will be 3.2 mega pixels, a big upgrade from the current 2.0 mega pixel. The photo also shows a blue square in the picture. This is the acclaimed auto-focus. You then move the small blue square and the camera focuses on that area. For example, if you are taking a picture of your friends faces, then all you have to do is drag the square over their faces and take the picture. This will greatly improve all of the pictures taken with the iPhone. It is also rumored that you will be able to shoot video. There is said to be a toggle at the bottom and you will be able to switch simultaneously.

     We cannot be sure if these pictures are authentic but a lot of evidence points to them being legitimate. All we can do is hope that Apple will add these features and hopefully even more.

     Pandora is a great app from the App Store. You can listen to music for free, but you can’t do anything else with your iPod Touch or iPhone at the same time. Pandora Controls solves this problem. All you have to do is open Pandora and set it to your favorite station and then press the home button. Now you can continue to listen to Pandora while you browse the rest of your iPhone. You can also double tap the home button to bring up a similar control scheme to the iPod app, which you can use to stop, pause, or skip to the next song.  It also adds the same controls to the lockscreen just like the iPod app. All in all Pandora controls makes a good application, great.

     Pandora Controls is available on Cydia through the Big Boss Repository. You must have Pandora 2.0.1 installed from the AppStore first.
