‘Freewheel‘, a video monetization start-up has reported that Apple dominates the mobile-video market with its 80% share. According to their quarterly report, the majority of video views are occurring on Apple’s iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The iPhone and iPod Touch account for 30% each out of the 80% held by Apple, with a further 20% managed by the iPad – the remaining 20% of the market is handled by Android devices.
This does not come as surprising news, since Apple was dominating the mobile-video market even before the launch of the iPad. ‘Freewheel’ believes that greater viewership on Apple devices represents the decision by video publishers and mobile developers to develop their applications and videos for iOS devices. Although Apple managed to sell only about 20 million iPads worldwide, the magical tablet already accounts for 20% of all mobile video.
GigaOM said in their article that:
We thought the iPad would be an ideal device for viewing video when it was announced, but the extent to which it has been embraced by even traditional video producers and distributors speaks to the power of the platform. TV networks like ABC and HBO have built applications for the iPad, as have pay TV operators like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and others.
