In the vast world of iOS devices these days, it is hard to stand out. The difference between an iPod touch, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 4 is minimal, and pretty much comes down to just hardware & case style. This is where the Apple TV stands out. It is (in my opinion) the ultimate in set top devices, combining Apple’s usual sleek styling with a high-definition device that is slowly replacing regular television.
I won’t get too detailed about the device specs as this is a jailbreak guide, however a device running a stripped version of iOS the Apple TV brings simplicity to the living room… and we are going to make it even better!
In the way of Apple TV jailbreaks there are multiple distributions you can choose from. This guide will walk you through Seas0npass, which can be found at seas0npass.com. There are a couple reasons I prefer this release, but the main reason for me is because I had the desire to run xbmc on my ATV2. I had done a jailbreak first with the PwnageTool which also installs nitoTV, however the audio is broken in xbmc, rendering it completely useless software. The Seas0npass jailbreak is simpler, quicker, and 100% working. The only downfall is that all software must be installed via SSH once you have jailbroken.
Now on to the jailbreak:
You will need to find/buy a micro usb. It plugs directly into the back of the unit to connect it to your computer.
If you haven’t done so already, goto seas0npass.com and download the latest version. (Firmware is irrelevant with seas0npass, because it auto downloads the latest IPSW file to complete the jailbreak).
Hit the “Create IPSW” button.
When prompted, put the ATV2 in DFU mode by holding down the Menu & Play buttons on your remote for about 5 seconds.
iTunes will automatically launch & restore your software. DO NOT touch the keyboard or mouse during this process.
Unplug & Enjoy!!
Note: Your jailbroken ATV2 is not complete with amazing software. Like I mentioned earlier in this guide I prefer xbmc. A guide for the installation of xbmc can be found here. Additionally you can go to this site for other third party software.
