Having bought your new iPhone 4, you immediately start to think about a case for your smart-phone. Of course, there are already many to choose from, but if you are looking for something slightly different from the rest, then have a close look at the ‘Griffin Survivor’ – it is more expensive than most cases, but it does seem to be worth the extra money.

According to Griffin’s website, this case is tested and certified to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F and UK Department of Defense Standard 00-35. The ‘Griffin Survivor Extreme-Duty Case’ is designed from the inside out to protect your iPhone from extreme conditions – dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration and a host of other environmental nasties.

What you get for your fifty bucks is not one, but two cases. There is an inner plastic case that surrounds the magic device and this you open by a handy slot that accepts the edge of a coin. You put your iDevice into the plastic case and this then goes into a rubberized cocoon – double protection for the price of one. There is also a shield that protects the display, and every port gets covered, so as the description says you will get good immunity from dust and moisture. The home button and the volume controls operate with the phone inside the case, and the front facing camera is also behind the shield – and the case comes with a removable belt clip to allow you to carry your iPhone securely.

You did not buy your iPhone to torture it on an assault course, but the ‘Griffin Survivor’ case does provide enhanced protection in relatively extreme conditions. It is not waterproof, but the manufacturer have had the case independently tested to meet military specifications for protection against blown rain, blown dust and grit, shock, vibration, temperature and humidity. If you want to see some genuine torture tests, you can find them on the Griffin website.

The case, for either the Verizon or AT&T iPhone 4 models, is available in white, pink, olive and black – but you will have to shell out $50 if you want one – depends on how much loving protection you want to give your precious iDevice.
