Although Apple did not attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it managed to take the event’s top award for a mobile device.

The Barcelona event is very important in the mobile industry, but Apple seems to have ignored the Consumer Electronics Show, held in January, and the Mobile World Congress, as it failed to show at either of the events. But the mere presence of Apple in the industry still carries a very strong message. Although the Cupertino-based company did not show in Barcelona, it topped the event by winning the top award for a mobile device, despite strong competition from manufactures who did make the trip.

Giving their decision, the judges said the iPhone4:

Has a great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smart-phones.

HTC also managed to win an award, with the judges ruling:

This company has built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customers service this is a well-deserved award.

The ‘Best Mobile App’ and ‘App of the Year of the Apple Platform’ was won by ‘Angry Birds’, developed by Rovio / Clickgamer / Chilingo, with the judges saying:

This is the 50 million plus selling app that catapulted the benchmark for mobile gaming higher than ever, it is innovative too in terms of in-application monetization.

At the same event, Google took the app award for the Android platform with ‘Google Maps’, with the following note coming from the judges:

This has been one of the most frequently updated applications on the market, and the latest iteration has made it simply one of the best mobil apps out there today.
