According to a new survey released by ‘Interpret’ – a market research firm – and published by ‘Industry Gamers’, users of hand-held games are moving away from dedicated devices, such as Sony PSP or Nintendo DS, in favor of smartphones like the iPhone.
The report reveals that almost half – more precisely 43.8% – of the surveyed phone / DS / PSP gaming market prefer playing games on the phone instead of dedicated devices. This is a significant 53.2% increase over the past year and, at the same time, Interpret says “the proportion of those who play on the DS or PSP has fallen 13%”
The first thought that springs to mind is that of an expanding hand-held gaming market! Yes, this is correct, because the capabilities of smartphones is increasing at an amazing pace. However, the additional information reveal that gamers are abandoning those DS and PSP in favor of their smart-phones. Yeah, if I take a look around my house, I am one of those people: I just love to play games on my iPhone, not on my gaming device.
“Gamers appear to be defecting from their hand-held gaming devices to phones to get their gaming kicks: a full 27.2% of consumers who indicate that they play games on their phones only…. actually own a DS or PSP, but do not actively use the device(s),” the Interpret notes.
