Apple has announced the next generation iPhone. It was presented by Steve Jobs during his keynote that started the annual WWDC. According to Apple’s CEO the phone is “beyond a doubt, the most precise thing, and one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever made”.

The new iPhone is 9.3 mm thick, which is 24% thinner than the previous generation iPhone. It comes with a new camera with an LED flash on the back and – although the leaks have revealed it, so that wasn’t a surprise, but still – a front facing camera as well. The new design includes new buttons for the volume, mute, and a second microphone placed on the top for noise cancellation. Also, the new smartphone now incorporates micro-SIM tray. Another great and game-changing feature included in this new smartphone is the antenna system. There are three antennas integrated, one for the Bluetooth, a second one for Wi-Fi and GPS and the third for UUMTS and GSM.

The iPhone 4 comes with a retina display that is a brand new technology to add improved and higher precision. As the previous leaks have already informed us, the new display is the double of the previous iPhone 3GS 163 pixels per inch resolution with its 326 pixels per inch. The new display has the same 3.5 inches diagonally, but includes four times as many pixels as the 3GS. In addition, the 800:1 contrast ratio is four times more than the previous version. The new smartphone uses the same IPS display technology that iPad and iMac users already appreciate. This is for natural colors, brightness and viewing angle.

The 4th generation iPhone ships with the A4 chip. The chip coupled with the new and bigger battery come to offer – according to Apple – 5 to 7 hours talk time, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-FI browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music  and 300 hours of standby. This equals 40% more performance. The storage is up to 32GB just like the previous model.

Another great feature is the three-axis gyroscope for angular velocity measurement. It can figure out pitch, roll and yawn, and rotation about gravity.

The long awaited camera update is about the new 5 megapixel camera with a 5x digital zoom and LED flash. Now you can record a video with a 720p HD video captured at 30 frames per second. And to make video sharing easier, Apple now includes iMovie on the iPhone. This will help you edit your videos right on your iDevice and even add photos. With iMovie on your smartphone you can add titles, change themes and use your music from your iTunes library.

The 4th generation iPhone is available for pre-order starting June 15 and it will be shipped as Apple tells us they will be available beginning June 24.
