Hackers have been busy on the newest software since it came out, and their methods of finding exploits have become more systematic and reliable than ever in recent months. iH8sn0w, a young hacker that recently appeared at the iPhone scene, created sn0wbreeze to jailbreak the 3.1.2 firmware, and recently made a version 1.5.1 to jailbreak the 3.1.3 firmware. iPhone users on Windows have been very gracious of his work, and along with his team he has continued to satisfy jailbreakers across the world with his smooth software while maintaining a busy school schedule. Up to the release of sn0wbreeze, Windows users were unable to create custom IPSW’s to install on their devices. iH8sn0w has also added the ability to boot up your Apple device with a custom boot logo and verbose, a mode that shows the iPhone’s code running across the screen while it reboots.
When Apple stopped signing previous firmwares, Saurik, the creator of Cydia and many other iPhone necessities, came to the rescue by giving users the option to backup their SHSHs so that they can downgrade to that firmware if ever it becomes necessary later on. Well, it became necessary when many, and I mean MANY, jailbreakers upgraded to Apple’s 3.1.3 firmware without thinking. Those that backed up their SHSHs were able to downgrade, but many people could not. iH8sn0w saved non-MC model iPhones with sn0wbreeze 1.5.1, therefore eliminating much grief and letting more 3.1.3 users jailbeak their devices.
Those who seek to unlock to a different carrier have encountered many issues by upgrading too early and not using a custom IPSW. With all of the complex processes one must go through to jailbreak and/or unlock their device, it surprises me that it has taken this long for someone to make a program that will help you solve these issues. iH8sn0w’s new f0recast, a program that will simplify jailbreakers’ lives, is a program that will tell you what you can do to jailbreak and unlock and where to go to do it.
In order to use f0recast, all you need is a Windows computer, a sync cable, and your iPhone or iPod touch. When you open f0recast, as seen in the image above, it will tell you your serial and model number, and your baseband, bootloader, and IPSW version. F0recast will then tell you whether or not you can Unlock to a different carrier, and a link to the unlock method (i.e. blacksn0w, ultrasn0w). Another nifty feature of iH8sn0w’s tool is that it will tell you whether or not a jailbreak will have to be tethered on reboot!
It is a miracle that someone has finally procured a tool that will actually answer most–if not all–of your questions by just having you plug in your device! f0recast will probably be more of a help to the hackers than anybody, because with all of the questions being asked on iH8sn0ws IRC channel, it gets one thinking that there there might be something the hackers would rather be doing… Like getting prepared to find 4.0 exploit!
