As we are all fully aware AT&T’s service quality is horrible to say the least, but who would have thought that the wireless giant would ever blame it on their customers?
The main reason anyone chooses to leave AT&T, or choose not to ever think about their service, is due to their fairly useless network. When the first iPhone came out, they weren’t ready. When the second iPhone came out, they still weren’t ready. When the third iPhone came out and all the way up until today they still remain unready, or unwilling, to support the main device their users crave. You would think that the “fool me once” proverb should surely apply. But AT&T has gone and further crossed the line by trying to blame their main source of wireless income, the iPhone userbase.
AT&T’s head of consumer services, Ralph de la Vega, told investors at a USB conference that they are in talks of releasing incentives for high-bandwith users to “reduce or modify their usage.” AT&T blames the heavy bandwith users for all their network woes. AT&T simply claims a scapegoat every time something isn’t going their way, and iPhone users seem to be the most prominent solution.
MMS was not released because iPhone users would use it to much. Network is having problems because iPhone users use it to much. Tethering isn’t ready because iPhone users would use it to much… and the list goes on. Why would you release a device for 3 consecutive years without being ready to support it at full capacity? Someone should have stepped back after year one and reevaluated their network strategy, not continued to barrage it with a swarm of new high usage devices.
I am more for hoping AT&T would spend their time, and my money, on upgrading their network, not just trying to find someone else to blame it on. I pay darn good money to use my network as much as I please, not have it restricted from me for no other reason than the fact that I use what I buy.

If it wasn’t for the iPhone being on AT&T, Verizon would be the most dominant no question about it. If Verizon could carry the iPhone I would switch in a minute. AT&T needs to man up and upgrade or they will sew more people going to other networks. I also think Apple needs to step up and put the squeeze on AT&T and look into moving networks. Just my thoughts but I am pissed at AT&T.
I am not sure it is full blame on AT&T as such, as much as it may have been Apple purposely underestimating the bandwith use to the execs at AT&T when the talks to get the iPhone on AT&Ts network. Maybe AT&T saw the potential of sales and expansion of it’s customer base and were agressive in its bidding making it a no brainer for Apple to choose AT&T. Just a thought, I agree with you if it was smaoke and mirrors by Apple to get AT&Ts bid, after the first iPhone AT&T should’ve scrambled to rectify the issues. Having said that I can only imagine how much of a logistic nightmare it would be in beefing up
the infrastructure.
But no matter how you slice it customer service and satisfaction should be job one for AT&T without any negative lip smack towards those that pay their salaries.
Whether it’s Apple’s or AT&T’s fault, neither of them are going to care. As long as they can strangle all the remaining nickels and dimes out of our pockets while locking us into 2 year contracts, they could care less; as long as they are getting their money, everything is A O K. The same applies to our government, media, and any other scenario really…
I completely agree and it’s unacceptable. I think I ended up paying about $135/mo for features I can’t even use any or most of the time. Lamelamelame…that’s why I’m jailbreaking and unlocking mine as I type this.
AT&T sucks that’s all. If it weren’t for the iPhone, I wouldn’t be on it. When my contract expires, I’m out! T-Mobile (with sucks but is cheaper) or Verizon (which will have a lot of Android phones in their lineup soon) will get my $’s
Unreal who Corporations are turning their backs more and more as this economic nightmare keeps showing it’s ugly face. I love my iPhone but now I see why my company is not worried in the least about AT&T’s Uverse trying to take our clients, it’s just a reflection of what those subscribers are to expect from a company that has gone nuts blaming their paying customer for their ancient network. How does the most expensive mobile service have the least and basic supporting features of a phone.
I have ATT. Went to Farmington, NM and they threatened to cancel my service when I got home after 5 days. Why? Because I used to much of my unlimited data plan while I was out of their network. Obviously unlimited is only unlim where and when they say!
I have had AT&T for over 10 years and have not had any of the problems I keep hearing about. As a matter of fact when I am on vacation most of my friends come to me so they can use my AT&T phone to make calls since they did not have recption. Not sure where all the issues are coming up but not in my neck of the woods.
And if you do not care for the service them switch carriers, if you don’t switch and continue to complain you have no one to blame but yourself.
