BoyGeniusReport reports via Gadgetell that AT&T is now finally offering the iPhone online with in-home activation! This is a great piece of news for all those waiting for a software unlock to be released before they buy the iPhone. Gadgettell quotes:
"I found this by looking for info on another phone, but found this advert when landing on their site. At first, I figured I was reading it wrong, so I chatted up an AT&T rep and sure enough, we are back in 2007: buy it online and activate it at home."
This is the conversation the guy named Jon had with the AT&T rep:
jon: Hello, if I purchase the iPhone online now, will I have to take it to an ATT store
for activation?
Kayla M.: Great question! I would be happy to help you with that today!
Kayla M.: No, you will be able to activate the phone yourself by placing the battery
into the phone.
jon: that is a change correct? previously it wasn’t available online.
Kayla M.: Yes, that is correct. It just became available online today.
jon: wow, great. thanks. that is all i needed to know
Kayla M.: You’re welcome. Thank you for choosing AT&T. Have a great day!
jon: you too.
So, customers no longer need to spend long wait/activation times at the store! They can just order the phone online from AT&T. Also, a weird thing noticed is that there's no such option at Apple Online Stores, so if you need it, get it at AT&T.

“You will be able to activate the phone yourself by placing the battery into the phone?”
Now you get the battery out from the phone when you buy it?

I have a question how do I get the battery in to my phone without damaging the case of the phone? And I guess the sim si already in the phone
I’m guessing Kayla M. meant the SIM card…. At least that’s all that makes sense….
I bought mine online and activated it at home the day I got it back in October.
