AT&T Mobility President and CEO Ralph De La Vega just announced that they are working with Apple to let the iPhone serve as a tethered wireless modem for laptops soon.
Currently there are ways to tether your iPhone if you know what you are doing and/or have a jailbroken phone, but there has yet to be an “official” way to do it from Apple or AT&T. The new tethering plan is bound to be ridiculously priced which makes me think that not many will use it. The only people who I believe will benefit are those either to scared or, for lack of a better word, ignorant to jailbreak their phone.
The only thing that angers me about the whole thing is the fact that there are other Windows Mobile phones that have free tethering such as the HTC Hermes, or AT&T 8525, that I used to have and has a tethering feature built in. In fact the whole “extra data plan” package that iPhone and Blackberry users have to pay is pretty ridiculous in itself. But who knows, if it is cheap enough maybe we all can just add it on and not even notice it!
